This Concurrent Resolution endorses and adopts the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, a global agreement aiming to eliminate all nuclear weapons, in order to advance United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16, which focuses on promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions by the year 2030. The resolution highlights the immense danger posed by the approximately 14,500 nuclear weapons still in existence, the potential for catastrophic climate disruption and famine even from limited use, and the historical near-misses that have averted nuclear war. It urges federal leaders to make nuclear disarmament a priority for U.S. national security, to renounce the first use of nuclear weapons, end sole presidential authority to launch a nuclear attack, take U.S. nuclear weapons off high alert, cancel plans for new nuclear weapons, and pursue verifiable agreements for disarmament, all in support of achieving a more peaceful and secure world.
