This bill, the Medicare Orthotics and Prosthetics Patient-Centered Care Act, aims to protect Medicare beneficiaries with limb loss and other orthopedic conditions by ensuring they have access to appropriate, safe, and effective orthotic and prosthetic care. It distinguishes orthotists and prosthetists from suppliers of durable medical equipment, establishes standards for obtaining a supplier number, and requires detailed written orders signed by treating physicians for orthotics and prosthetics. The bill also prohibits payment for certain orthotics and prosthetics delivered by drop shipment, standardizes the definitions of orthotics and prosthetics, and limits the application of competitive acquisition for off-the-shelf orthotics. Additionally, the Secretary of Health and Human Services is required to promulgate final regulations to implement the provisions of the Act.
