This bill amends the Public Officers Law to establish residency requirements for police officers in New York. Specifically, it provides that starting January 1, 2022, no person shall be appointed as a paid member of any police force unless they have resided in the political subdivision or municipal corporation they will serve for at least one year prior to their appointment and continue to reside there. This requirement applies to all police forces in New York, including those in cities with a population of over one million. The bill also removes certain exemptions to residency requirements that previously existed for police officers and other public safety personnel.
