This bill amends a section of Massachusetts state law to provide equal benefits for veterans who serve or have served in the National Guard, Active Reserve, or armed forces of the United States. The key provisions are: 1) members in service of a retirement system who have served in the National Guard, Active Reserve, or armed forces are entitled to credit for such service; 2) they must pay into the annuity savings fund an amount equal to 10% of their regular annual compensation when they entered the retirement system for each year of creditable service sought; and 3) this creditable service is limited to no more than 4 years and does not apply to any period of service for which the member has already received credit under the existing law.
