This bill amends Chapter 54 of the General Laws to address vacancies in certain county positions, such as district attorney, register of probate, sheriff, and clerks of the courts. If there is a failure to elect or a vacancy in these offices, except during the last nine months of the term, the governor will issue a precept to hold an election within 120 days to fill the position. In the event of a vacancy, the first assistant or special deputy will assume the duties of the office until a new officer is elected and qualified. The justices of the relevant court may also appoint a clerk to hold the office until a new clerk is qualified in the event of a vacancy.
