Bill Summary
Relative to the reporting of spent nuclear fuel at certain electricity generating facilities. Public Health.
AI Summary
This bill amends Chapter 111 of the General Laws by (a) adding the phrase "STORAGE OF SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL:" to the title of Section 5K, and (b) adding a new subsection (I) to Section 5K. The new subsection requires the owner and operator of any electricity generating facility in Massachusetts that stores spent nuclear fuel in dry casks to report to the Department of Public Health, on a continuous real-time basis, the temperature and the rate of helium and radiation release from each dry cask. The Department of Public Health is required, in consultation with the Office of the Attorney General, to promulgate rules and regulations to implement this reporting requirement. The purpose of these provisions is to prevent, mitigate, or alleviate the impacts on the resources of the Commonwealth and the health of its citizens from radiation emitted by spent nuclear fuel at these facilities.
