Bill Summary

Relative to creating a rebuttable presumption of job relatedness for certain public safety personnel suffering from disabling conditions caused by certain cancers. Public Service.

AI Summary

This bill establishes a rebuttable presumption that certain types of cancer affecting police officers and state troopers are job-related, if the officer or trooper passed a physical examination upon entry into service that did not reveal evidence of the condition. The presumption applies to cancers of the skin, central nervous, lymphatic, endocrine, digestive, hematological, urinary, skeletal, oral, prostate, lung, or respiratory systems, as long as the cancer is a type that may result from radiation, air pollutants, particulate matter, chemical agents, or known carcinogens. The presumption does not apply to officers or troopers with less than 5 years of service, but those who develop a covered cancer within 5 years of leaving service can still apply for benefits. The bill also allows the Department of Public Health to identify other types of cancer with a statistically significant correlation to police service, and extend the presumption to those as well.
