This bill amends Section 9C (1/2) of Chapter 32B of the General Laws in Massachusetts. It does the following: 1. Adds language to include children over the age of 19 who are physically or mentally incapacitated from earning income as eligible for continued health insurance coverage under the surviving spouse of a call or volunteer firefighter. 2. Removes the requirement that the children "continue to" be covered under the surviving spouse's health insurance. 3. Changes the language from the surviving spouse paying "100 per cent of the premium" to paying "a premium at the same rate as retirees of the governmental unit from time to time as part of the total cost for such hospital, surgical, medical, dental and other health insurance." The purpose of this bill is to expand access to health insurance coverage for the surviving spouses and dependent children of call and volunteer firefighters who have passed away.
