This bill aims to enhance driver impairment prevention by amending Section 24 of Chapter 90 of the General Laws. The key provision is that individuals who are required to participate in a residential alcohol treatment program or an outpatient counseling program will undergo an assessment using a standardized, evidence-based instrument to determine if they have a substance use disorder diagnosis and would benefit from medication-assisted treatment (MAT) approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). If MAT is indicated, the individual will be seen by or referred to a provider authorized to prescribe the FDA-approved medication, which will be provided as long as it is clinically indicated and used in conjunction with an individualized treatment plan.
