This bill allows veterans who retired prior to July 24, 1996 from a retirement system in Massachusetts to receive credit for up to four years of active military service, provided they have not already received credit for that service under existing law. It also applies to National Guard and Active Reserve personnel who are veterans, and allows them to apply their guard or reserve service towards retirement on a ratio of five years of guard/reserve service for each year of active service. The bill requires local legislative bodies, such as town meetings or city councils, to vote to accept the provisions of the bill for their retirement system in order for the members to become eligible for the additional creditable service.
