This bill, the Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act, allows federal law enforcement officers to purchase retired handguns that were previously issued to them by their agency. The bill requires the General Services Administration to establish a program within one year of enactment, allowing officers to purchase these retired handguns during a 6-month period after the handguns are retired, provided the officer passes a background check and is in good standing with their agency. The handguns must be sold at fair market value, and it is the sense of Congress that any proceeds from these sales should be used to fund evidence-based gun violence prevention or gun safety education and training programs.
