This bill aims to address the increasing prevalence of heart disease, including its relationship to type 2 diabetes, among communities disproportionately affected by these conditions, such as South Asian communities in the United States. The bill provides for the following key provisions: 1. It authorizes the Secretary of Health and Human Services to make grants to states to promote awareness of heart health, develop culturally appropriate educational materials, support community organizations working with affected communities, and facilitate research on how to better include members of these communities in heart disease research. 2. It requires the Secretary to enter into an agreement with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (or another appropriate entity) to conduct a study on the relationship between COVID-19 and rates of morbidity and mortality due to heart disease in at-risk populations, such as South Asian communities. 3. It requires the Secretary to submit annual reports to Congress on outreach efforts and data relating to heart disease in communities disproportionately affected by these conditions. 4. It authorizes the appropriation of $1 million per fiscal year from 2023 through 2027 to carry out the provisions of the bill.
