This bill, the Montana Headwaters Legacy Act, amends the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act to designate certain streams in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem and Smith River system in Montana as components of the Wild and Scenic Rivers System. The designated river segments, including the Smith River, Gallatin River, Madison River, and Yellowstone River, among others, will be administered by the Secretary of Agriculture or the Secretary of the Interior to preserve their outstandingly remarkable values, such as clean water, abundant wildlife, and recreational opportunities. The bill respects private property rights, allows for maintenance of existing infrastructure, and permits historical uses to continue. It also does not affect valid existing rights, including water compacts and rights.
