This bill, known as the Fire Information and Reaction Enhancement (FIRE) Act, directs the Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to maintain a program that improves wildfire forecasting and detection capabilities. The key goals of the program include enhancing the prediction of wildfire intensification and spread, improving the forecast and communication of smoke dispersion, creating more effective watch and warning products, and enhancing early detection of wildfires to contain their growth and mitigate damages. To achieve these goals, the bill authorizes NOAA to conduct development, testing, and deployment activities related to advanced satellite detection, grid-based assessments of fuel moisture and danger levels, coupled atmosphere and fire modeling systems, linking climate predictions to land management decisions, and improving spatial and temporal resolution observations in high latitudes. The bill also authorizes the establishment of a weather research testbed program to develop improved detection and forecast capabilities for wildfires and their impacts.
