This bill, the Gun Trafficker Detection Act, requires individuals who own firearms that have been shipped or transported across state lines and discover the theft or loss of the firearm to report it to the Attorney General within 48 hours. The Attorney General is then required to notify the local law enforcement authorities. The bill also imposes civil penalties of up to $1,000 for a first violation and up to $5,000 for subsequent violations of the reporting requirement. Additionally, the bill prohibits individuals who have been assessed these civil penalties multiple times from receiving firearms for a certain period. The bill further requires the Attorney General to update the National Instant Criminal Background Check System to account for these new provisions.
