This bill establishes a fire cadet program for the City of Cambridge fire department. It allows the appointing authority to appoint Cambridge residents between 18 and 23 years old as fire cadets for on-the-job training, without being subject to civil service laws or rules. Fire cadets will receive compensation and leave as determined by the appointing authority, and their appointment can be terminated at any time. The bill also allows fire cadets who have completed at least two years of service to be appointed to the lowest grade in the Cambridge fire force without certification from a civil service eligible list, subject to certain conditions. Additionally, it limits the number of such appointments to no more than 33 1/3% of the total number of appointments to the Cambridge fire force in a given year.
