This Joint Resolution officially designates September 22nd of each year as "Veterans Suicide Awareness & Remembrance Day" in New Jersey, a day to honor and remember veterans and active military members who have died by suicide, as well as to support their families. The resolution acknowledges the significant sacrifices made by service members, the immense stress and trauma they often endure during deployment, and the resulting increase in mental health challenges like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It highlights the alarming number of veteran suicides, which tragically surpasses combat deaths in recent conflicts, and recognizes the efforts of various organizations providing crucial resources and support. By establishing this day, the resolution aims to increase public awareness of this critical issue, encourage the use of available mental health services, and reduce the stigma associated with seeking help for veterans and active military personnel. The Governor is also requested to annually issue a proclamation encouraging public observance of this day with appropriate activities and programs.
