This bill, called the "Safe Guns, Safe Kids Act," amends Chapter 44 of Title 18 of the United States Code to require the safe storage of firearms. The key provisions of the bill make it unlawful for a person to knowingly store or keep a firearm on the premises of a residence if they know or reasonably should know that a minor (someone under 18 years of age) is likely to gain access to the firearm without the permission of the parent or guardian, and the minor then uses the firearm to commit a crime or cause injury or death. However, the bill provides an exception if the person keeps the firearm secured using a gun storage or safety device, or in a location that a reasonable person would believe to be secure, or if the person carries the firearm on their person or within close proximity. Violations of the safe storage requirement can result in fines or imprisonment of up to 5 years.
