This bill permits the inclusion of volunteer firefighters and other emergency responders within the municipal eligible employee group for the purposes of the small employer health benefits plan statutes. The bill amends the definition of "eligible employee" in the existing law to explicitly include members of volunteer fire companies and incorporated volunteer first aid, emergency, rescue, or ambulance squads who are eligible to receive benefits under the law governing such municipal entities. This change allows these volunteer emergency responders to be counted as employees for determining the size of a small employer and their eligibility for small employer health benefits plans.
