This bill authorizes the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission to issue classic New Jersey license plates, which would replicate the design used between 1979 and 1991. Motorists can apply for these plates by paying a $50 application fee, as well as an annual $10 fee in addition to the regular vehicle registration fees. The additional fees collected will be deposited into a "Special Transportation Fund" to be used for transportation projects in the state. The bill also stipulates that the Motor Vehicle Commission cannot use public funds to cover the initial costs of designing, producing, and publicizing the classic plates, and that a designated entity must contribute up to $25,000 in non-public funds to offset those initial costs. The bill will only take effect once the required non-public funds have been provided and the Commission has received at least 500 completed applications for the classic plates.
