This bill establishes a three-year pilot program in the New Jersey Department of Education (DOE) to purchase and install electronic smoking device detectors in the restrooms of certain public schools serving grades 7 through 12. The goal of the program is to study the effect of these detectors in deterring student use of electronic smoking devices, such as e-cigarettes and vape pens. The DOE will select up to 12 school districts to participate, prioritizing districts located in municipalities with the highest rates of underage electronic smoking device use. The Commissioner of Education will submit a report evaluating the effectiveness of the pilot program at the end of the three-year period.
