This bill permits excused absences for students in grades 6-12 who attend civic events. A "civic event" is defined as an event sponsored by a government entity, community-based organization, or nonprofit organization that incorporates elements of service learning and addresses an issue of public concern. Students are allowed one state-excused absence per school year to attend a civic event, provided that the student's parent or guardian provides written notice to the school at least five days in advance. The Commissioner of Education, with the approval of the State Board of Education, will provide guidance to school districts on the implementation of these excused absences, and the State Board of Education will promulgate rules and regulations to effectuate the provisions of the act.
