This bill establishes the Office of Inspector General for Veterans' Facilities, which will be independent of the Department of Law and Public Safety. The Inspector General will be appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the Senate for a 5-year term. The Inspector General is authorized to investigate complaints, conduct evaluations and inspections, and initiate investigations to ensure the safety and quality of care provided at veterans' facilities. The Inspector General is empowered to compel testimony and the production of documents, and may refer potential criminal conduct to the Division of Criminal Justice. The bill also requires the Inspector General to meet regularly with other state officials to coordinate investigations and reviews, and to submit reports on the findings and recommendations from investigations to the Governor and Legislature.
