This bill establishes an advisory council on rare diseases within the Department of Health. The council will advise the governor, state agencies, and the legislature on research, diagnosis, treatment, and education related to rare diseases, which are defined as diseases that affect fewer than 200,000 people in the United States. The council will include clinicians, researchers, patients, patient advocates, and representatives from the health care industry and the Children with Special Health Care Needs program. The council will identify effective strategies for diagnosing and treating rare diseases, develop a continuing medical education program, and establish a centralized, publicly accessible repository of information related to rare diseases in Washington state. The council will submit biennial reports to the governor and legislature on its work and recommendations.
