This bill allows private employers in New Mexico to provide a hiring preference for certain veterans, their spouses, and their widows/widowers. The policy must be applied uniformly to hiring and promotion decisions, and such a preference will not be considered a violation of any state or local equal employment opportunity law. The term "veteran" is defined as a person who has received an honorable discharge or whose separation from military service was under honorable conditions. The bill would take effect on July 1, 2022.
