This Memorial requests the Governor of New Mexico to declare September 23, 2022, as "Fourth Trimester Care Day" to acknowledge and address the critical, often overlooked, period of physical, hormonal, and psychosocial transformation a mother undergoes in the first three months after childbirth, a phase referred to as the "fourth trimester." The memorial highlights that current healthcare often focuses heavily on pregnancy and immediate postpartum, with limited follow-up, leaving many mothers to struggle with undiagnosed and untreated physical and mental health issues, such as postpartum depression, anxiety, breastfeeding difficulties, and physical pain, which can negatively impact their well-being and their ability to care for their infants. It also points out societal challenges like insufficient maternity leave and workplace accommodations that hinder recovery and breastfeeding, emphasizing the need for comprehensive support for mothers during this vital transition, and further requests that a physical therapy organization present to the legislative health and human services committee on this topic.
