This Memorial honors Elaine Anaya for her significant contributions to New Mexico, recognizing her journey from Pennsylvania to establishing a home and family in the state, developing a deep affection for its culture, and supporting her husband, Toney Anaya, through his political career as Attorney General and Governor. Before serving as New Mexico's twenty-third First Lady from 1983 to 1987, she was a successful businesswoman who owned companies in electronic office equipment and secretarial services. During her time as First Lady, she championed the arts and early childhood education, and she was also a talented artist whose work was displayed in galleries. After her tenure as First Lady, Elaine Anaya continued her advocacy for vulnerable populations, including those experiencing homelessness, behavioral health issues, domestic violence, and human trafficking, always prioritizing her family above all else. The memorial also directs that a copy be sent to her family.
