This bill, the Volcanic Ash and Fumes Act of 2022, aims to improve the National Volcano Early Warning and Monitoring System by enhancing the collaboration between the United States Geological Survey and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The bill amends the John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act to strengthen the warning and monitoring systems of volcano observatories in the United States, including by integrating NOAA's capacities to observe and model emissions of gases, aerosols, and ash, as well as atmospheric and ocean chemistry resulting from volcanic eruptions. The bill also requires the Secretary of Commerce to develop a plan to implement these changes over the next 5 years and make the plan publicly available.
