This Joint Resolution proposes to amend the New Mexico Constitution to create a Public Officer Salary Commission, a seven-member state agency responsible for setting and limiting the salaries of elected state officials, including the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, state treasurer, state auditor, commissioner of public lands, justices and judges of various courts, legislators, and district attorneys, as well as other public officers as defined by law. This commission would also consider other forms of compensation like perquisites, allowances, or reimbursements. The resolution also aims to repeal existing constitutional provisions that dictate legislative per diem and mileage, prohibit legislative compensation, and establish executive and judicial salaries through law, thereby shifting the authority for salary determination for these public officers to the newly proposed commission.
