This bill establishes the California Indian Education Act, which encourages school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools to form California Indian Education Task Forces with local California tribes or tribes historically located in the region. The task forces are encouraged to develop accurate, high-quality curricular materials about the history, culture, and government of local tribes, identify and address the achievement gap between Indian and other students, and work to ensure that all students learn about the experiences of their Indian peers and neighbors. The bill requires the task forces to submit annual reports to the California Department of Education, which must then report to the Legislature on the progress made in narrowing the achievement gap and adopting the curriculum developed by the task forces. The bill also allows the task forces to submit their curricular materials to the county office of education or consortium of county offices that is developing a model curriculum related to Native American studies, and requires that office to consider those materials for inclusion.
