This bill amends Tennessee's firearms laws in a few ways. First, it creates a new offense for storing a firearm or ammunition in a motor vehicle or boat when not in the vehicle, unless the firearm or ammunition is kept out of ordinary view and locked in the trunk, glove box, or a secured container. This offense is punishable only by completion of a gun safety course, with no fines or jail time. Second, it requires the owner of a lost or stolen firearm to report the loss or theft to law enforcement within 24 hours, also punishable only by a gun safety course. Finally, it updates an existing law to reference the new storage requirements. The bill takes effect on July 1, 2022.
