This bill directs the Secretary of State to seek negotiations with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) to rename its office in the United States the "Taiwan Representative Office." The bill states that it is the policy of the United States to provide the people of Taiwan with de facto diplomatic treatment equivalent to foreign countries, consistent with the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances. The bill further specifies that if the TECRO is renamed, any references in U.S. government documents to the TECRO shall be deemed references to the Taiwan Representative Office. However, the bill clarifies that this does not entail restoration of diplomatic relations with Taiwan or alter the U.S. position on Taiwan's international status.
