This Joint Memorial requests the New Mexico Legislative Council to implement a policy requiring all interim committees, which are groups that meet between legislative sessions to study issues and prepare for future lawmaking, to follow the rules of the Open Meetings Act. The Open Meetings Act, often called a "sunshine law," ensures that government meetings are open to the public so citizens can be informed about how their government operates. Currently, interim committee meetings are not subject to these open meeting requirements, and this memorial argues that applying the Act to them would increase public access to information and lead to a more informed electorate.
