This Memorial recognizes David Lee Ubinger, a mathematics teacher at Chaparral High School in the Gadsden Independent School District, for receiving the 2020 Golden Apple Excellence in Teaching Award. The Golden Apple Foundation of New Mexico annually selects up to seven teachers statewide who inspire students, and David Lee Ubinger was chosen for his dedication to creating an engaging and authentic learning environment, actively seeking new resources, and challenging the notion that math ability is innate or limited to certain students. He was inspired to teach after witnessing students' self-doubt about math skills, ultimately changing his career path from civil engineering to teaching mathematics, supported by a scholarship from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), with the belief that all students have the opportunity to learn and excel.
