This Memorial requests that the Public Education Department, in collaboration with the Higher Education Department and the Workforce Solutions Department, conduct a comprehensive study of the pathway from education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to careers in those fields, acknowledging the current low proficiency levels in these subjects among students and the high demand for STEM jobs. The study will include an inventory of existing programs and initiatives, and the departments are tasked with addressing the statewide shortage of qualified STEM teachers by building a more effective and diverse teaching workforce, with a particular emphasis on high-quality, sustained professional development for educators. The findings and recommendations of this study, along with a plan for the STEM education-to-career pipeline, are to be reported to the Governor and the Legislature by December 1, 2023, with an initial inventory provided to legislative committees by September 1, 2023.
