Bill Summary

This bill provides for life imprisonment without eligibility for parole for defendants who are convicted of murdering an emergency responder. Under current law, if a murder victim was a law enforcement officer who was murdered while performing his official duties or was murdered because of his status as a law enforcement officer, the court is required to sentence the person convicted of the murder to a term of life imprisonment, during which the person is not eligible for parole. This bill expands this provision to also make it similarly applicable to defendants who murder emergency responders.

AI Summary

This bill expands the existing requirement for life imprisonment without parole for defendants convicted of murdering a law enforcement officer to also apply to those who murder an emergency responder. Under current law, if a murder victim was a law enforcement officer who was murdered while performing their official duties or because of their status as a law enforcement officer, the court must sentence the defendant to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. This bill extends this mandatory life sentence without parole to defendants who murder emergency responders as well, such as firefighters, EMTs, or other first responders.
