This Memorial recognizes Jacob Torres, an engineer and plant scientist at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, for his significant contributions to growing New Mexico chile in space. His work led to New Mexico chile being selected for an experiment on the International Space Station, specifically the NUMEX Espanola improved chile pepper, which was found to grow well in the Advanced Plant Habitat 04 system. Torres also spearheaded the "space chile grow a pepper plant challenge," an educational initiative that engaged students globally, including in New Mexico, in growing chile peppers and fostering interest in science, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. This initiative has become a NASA-funded activity under his leadership, and he actively engages with students through virtual outreach.
