This bill amends the Insurance Company Law of 1921 to require health insurance policies to provide coverage for the treatment of eating disorders, including inpatient hospitalization, partial hospitalization, residential treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, follow-up outpatient care, counseling, medical nutrition therapy, and nutrition therapy services. The bill specifies that medical necessity determinations and care management for eating disorder treatment must consider the overall medical and mental health needs of the individual, and cannot be based solely on weight or inconsistent with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). The bill also prohibits insurers from denying coverage or providing incentives to avoid the requirement, and limits cost-sharing for eating disorder treatment to be no greater than for other comparable medical or surgical services.
