This bill provides an exception for Legal Services of New Jersey and other public interest organizations, as well as certain other organizations that contract with or serve as authorized agents or grantees on behalf of the Department of Community Affairs, from the confidentiality requirements for certain eviction records. The bill allows these organizations to access nonpayment court records when necessary to fulfill their purposes, even if they have not entered a formal notice of appearance in the matter. The bill also allows the courts and other public entities to retain and distribute demographic information from these eviction records for the purpose of understanding the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on evictions or for other public purposes, as long as personally-identifiable information remains confidential.
