This bill eliminates the position of constable, removes statutory references to constables, and repeals various parts of statutory law implementing a recommendation of the State Commission of Investigation (SCI) report concerning the elimination of constables. The bill transfers the functions, powers, and duties previously assigned to constables to other law enforcement officials, such as sheriffs and police officers. The bill also specifies that the elimination of the constable position will not impair the validity of municipal employment contracts for constables entered into prior to the effective date of the bill, but any provisions of such contracts granting powers and duties associated with the constable position will be deemed null and void.
