This bill requires the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to conduct a study on the status of school segregation in Massachusetts public schools. The study will assess current and historical trends of school segregation, establish a measure of school-level segregation, evaluate past and current integration programs, identify successful integration efforts in other states, and pinpoint laws and regulations that hinder integration efforts. The bill also requires DESE to develop recommendations to advance school integration, prioritizing proposals that expand educational opportunity in historically disadvantaged communities. The final report, including analysis, recommendations, and proposed legislation, must be submitted to the legislature by June 30, 2024.
