This bill, known as the Baby Food Protection Act, provides for the testing and labeling of baby food sold in Pennsylvania. It requires the state Department of Health to test representative samples of each batch of baby food manufactured in the state for the presence of toxic heavy metals like inorganic arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury. The bill sets maximum allowed levels for these substances in baby food and requires labels to disclose the levels found. The Department of Health is also tasked with promulgating any necessary rules and regulations to carry out the provisions of the act. If federal legislation on baby food testing and labeling is enacted, the state law will sunset and be replaced by the federal requirements.
