This bill, known as the "Parental Rights Awareness Act," aims to strengthen parental involvement and transparency in their children's education. It requires school districts to adopt procedures for notifying parents of significant changes in their child's health or well-being, and prohibits school personnel from discouraging parental notification or involvement in critical decisions affecting their child's health and well-being. The bill also restricts classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity for younger students and mandates that student support services training adhere to guidelines set by the Department of Education. Additionally, it establishes a process for parents to raise concerns and seek resolution, including through the commissioner of education and administrative law judges. The Department of Education and the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board are required to review and update relevant frameworks, standards, and guidelines by June 2023 to align with the requirements of this act.
