This bill, the Aviation Emissions Reduction Opportunity (AERO) Act, establishes a competitive grant program to provide funding for projects that produce, transport, blend, or store sustainable aviation fuel, or develop, demonstrate, or apply low-emission aviation technologies. The Secretary of Transportation, in consultation with other federal agencies, will consider several factors in awarding the grants, including the projects' capacity to increase domestic production and deployment of sustainable aviation fuel and low-emission technologies, their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and their ability to create new jobs and supply chain partnerships. The bill also authorizes $200 million per year from 2023 to 2027 to carry out the grant program and $100 million per year during the same period to support the Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions, and Noise (CLEEN) program, which focuses on developing and demonstrating aircraft and engine technologies that reduce noise, emissions, and fuel consumption.
