This bill, the Gun Violence Prevention and Safe Communities Act of 2022, would increase certain taxes related to firearms. Specifically, it would: 1. Increase the excise tax on the sale of firearms, including frames and receivers, by 0.5 percentage points, with the additional revenue going to a new Gun Violence Prevention Trust Fund. This fund would be used for community-based violence intervention and prevention initiatives, gun violence research, hate crimes data collection and prevention, and firearm forensics activities. 2. Adjust the occupational and transfer taxes related to firearms to account for inflation, increasing the $1,000 and $500 occupational tax amounts and the $200 and $5 transfer tax amounts based on changes in the Consumer Price Index since 2021. The goal of this legislation is to provide additional funding for programs and initiatives aimed at reducing gun violence and its impacts on communities.
