This bill establishes a teacher certification route for candidates with Montessori teaching credentials. Candidates who hold a Montessori teaching credential issued by the American Montessori Society, the Association of Montessori International, or an accredited institution, and have a bachelor's degree, can obtain a certificate of eligibility from the State Board of Examiners without completing a state-approved educator preparation program. Instead, they must complete a Montessori teacher preparation program with at least 200 academic hours and 400 practicum hours. The bill also waives certain requirements, such as pre-professional experience and additional coursework, for these candidates to obtain a provisional or standard instructional certificate. The Department of Education is required to conduct a study on this certification route, and school boards must report annually on the number of teachers hired with this certification.
