This bill permits certain persons to operate Type S school buses, which are motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 3,000 pounds or more and a maximum seating capacity of nine passengers or less, excluding the driver. The bill establishes the requirements for obtaining a Type S School Bus Certificate, including being at least 21 years old, having held a valid basic driver's license for at least three years, passing physical and knowledge examinations, and completing training on interacting with students with special needs. Holders of a valid non-commercial basic driver's license and a Type S School Bus Certificate are allowed to operate a Type S school bus without obtaining a commercial driver's license, passenger endorsement, or school bus endorsement. The bill also amends existing laws to include Type S school bus drivers under certain provisions related to school bus drivers, such as suspension or revocation of driving privileges and leaving students on the bus.
