This bill requires the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to conduct a comprehensive study on the feasibility and benefits of using filtering systems and technologies to remove microplastics from drinking water and wastewater in New Jersey. The study will evaluate the impacts of microplastics on human health and the environment, the available filtering systems and their performance, and the feasibility of establishing financial incentives to encourage the development and deployment of effective microplastics filtering technologies in the state. The DEP and BPU are also required to authorize and facilitate pilot microplastics filtering projects, and subsequently submit a report with findings and recommendations for legislative, executive, and other actions to promote the increased use of such filtering systems and technologies in New Jersey.
