This bill, known as the Safe and Supportive Schools Act, requires the California Department of Education to develop an online training platform and curriculum to provide LGBTQ cultural competency training for teachers and other certificated employees serving students in grades 7-12. Starting in the 2025-26 school year, local educational agencies (school districts, county offices of education, and charter schools) must provide at least one hour of this training annually to their teachers and staff. The bill also requires the Department to monitor compliance with the training requirement and provide a report to the Legislature after the 5-year training period. The bill includes provisions to ensure the training is provided during paid work hours and allows for alternative in-person training options. If the state mandates costs related to this bill, local agencies and school districts will be reimbursed accordingly.
