This bill amends Section 16-23-500 of the South Carolina Code of Laws to expand the unlawful possession of a firearm or ammunition offense. The bill increases the scope of the offense from persons convicted of a violent crime classified as a felony to any person convicted of a crime punishable by a maximum term of imprisonment of five years or more. It also provides for graduated, mandatory minimum penalties for first, second, and third or subsequent offenses. The bill further requires the court to make a specific finding that the offense is subject to the provisions of this section and defines a "prior offense" for the purposes of this section.
